URSS Driving Seminar Recap
Although the morning started off brisk, The United Rebel
Sprint Series Driving Seminar Presented by Midwest Contractors and Berry
Motors held at the Rolling Plains Motor Speedway was a rousing success.
Drivers from four states converged on the 3/8's mile oval for the one-day
seminar. Those in attendance included many current drivers from various
classes along with several "fans from the stands" who just couldn't turn
down the opportunity of a lifetime to strap into one of these unique race cars.
2006 URSS Series Champion and featured Seminar Instructor Jon
Johnson lead those in attendance through the classroom portion of the Seminar.
The participants were given a thorough education on the basics of Sprint Car
Set-up as well as the in and outs of weekly maintainence duties to field an entry.
Each participant was given an informative handout packet which included several
examples of car set-ups as well as detailed information on the building and technical
aspects of a Sprint Car. A highlight for many of those in attendence was the portion
of the program in which Johnson showed the proper way to set up the injection systems
on his car. Drivers were given information on the Safety aspects of driving a Sprint Car,
and it was stressed that these race cars can and will hurt you at any time. The importance of having
all required safety equipment as well as its proper use was stressed to keep drivers as
safe as possible at all times.
With the Classroom instruction finished, all the participants suited up for the
"on track" protion of the day. Each participant was given extensive instructions on the proper
starting technique for the car they we assigned as well as how to exit the track after each of their
sessions were completed. Each driver was sent to the track individually for their first 5 lap sesion
to get accustomed to the car and to feel out the race track for the first time. After that session,
each was given a quick evaluation of the first session and pushed off for their final 10 laps. Most
in attendence made the most of the seat time they were given, as lap by lap they pushed the envelope
a little farther each time around the track. Amazingly there were no incidents except for a few well timed 360 degree spin and go's and a few
times those spins couldn't be saved requiring a quick on track push off or two.
URSS Series Founder Rick Salem had the following to say about the Seminar, "I want to
thank Everyone who attended for an extremelly successful event. Everyone did a
