Sid Blanford Battles His Way to URSS Win at McCook
Nebraska
The United Rebel Sprint
Series made its second visit in 2008 to the McCook Speedway
Sunday afternoon for the final Multi-Region Showdown between
the Northern, Eastern and Western Regions. Twenty-Four teams
made the trip to the 3/8’s mile oval to stake claim to those
last crucial points as the Season winds down. Sid Blanford
survived a lap one incident and wove his way through the
entire field to take the win.
Timken Kansas’s Craig
Jecha led the field to the green, as the field was in turn
two Willie Wynn, Bill Hays and Sid Blanford got tangled up
with Hays ending up on his side. In turn four Jon Johnson,
Taylor Velasquez and Ray Seemann were involved in a similar
tangle. Hays and Velasquez suffered enough damage to end
their race. On the restart, Taylor Milton jumped out to the
early lead with Jecha, Kirby Hagans, Tommy Williams and Mike
Woodruff rounding out the top five. Williams made his way
past Hagans for the third spot on lap two with Woodruff
applying pressure to Hagans.
Williams and Hagans
continued to fight for the position until Williams got high
in turn three and left the track to bring out the caution.
On the restart Milton once again assumed the point with
Hagans and Woodruff in tow. Lap eight saw Sid Blanford make
his way through the field to the sixth position and set his
sights on fifth running Brain Herbert. Blanford made the
pass on lap ten and starting applying pressure on fourth
place Jason Martin. Blanford used every inch of the track as
he and Martin battled back and forth before Blanford made
the high side pass on lap fifteen.
Blanford made short work
of Hagan and Milton as he assumed the lead on lap sixteen.
Milton was being pressured by Hagans and Martin as the laps
started to wind down. Martin made the pass stick on Hagans
on lap eighteen, Martin then set his sights on Milton for
the second position. Time would run out on Martin as the
checkered flag fell with Blanford taking his second URSS
Feature win of the year with Milton, Martin, Hagans and
Woodruff rounding out the top five.

“Hard Charger Award” went to Smokey Fairbank who came from
