Herbert Duels His Way
To URSS Win at Dodge City.
Despite chilly and windy conditions, those who braved
the elements where treated to a whale of a race. Track
conditions where fast, smooth and tacky, which made for
some good old fashioned petal to the metal feature which
kept the fans on their feet.
Leading the field the green flag was Dodge City’s Keefe
Hemel and Brian Herbert who started their battle for the
drop of the green. Following closely was Brandon Fisher,
Kris Miller and Nick King rounding out the top five.
Herbert was in Hemel’s tire tracks as they made lap
after lap. The top five stayed the same as by lap six
the leaders started to come up on lap traffic. Herbert
tried to use lapped cars as picks but Hemel kept the
lead as the pair continued to dice their way through the
field.
Back in the pack Taylor Velasquez, Ray Seemann and
Darren Bowman put on a show battled for the 7th
through 9th spots. The positions swapped back
and forth lap after lap as the trio exchanged positions,
but at the flag stand Velasquez prevailed to hold on to
the 7th spot.
Herbert continued to mirror Hemel as they battled lap
traffic until lap 13 when Herbert took the top spot away
from Hemel. Herbert continued to keep Hemel at bay until
lap 18 when Hemel got by Herbert on the back stretch,
but it was to be short lived as Kris Moore spun in turn
three giving the lead back to Herbert. On the restart,
the pair stayed glued together until lap 19 when Herbert
bicycled in turn one but saved it as Hemel drove around
Herbert to claim the top spot. Herbert got a run down
the back stretch and dove under Hemel in turn three to
take the spot away for good.
After the white flag fell for the leaders, Darren Bowman
made contact with another car and took a wild ride in
turn one catch fence to bring out the red flag. Bowman
was taken to a local Hospital to be checked out and was
released according to information from the Bowman Racing
Team. Herbert took the win with Hemel, Fisher, Miller
and King rounding out the top five.
The “Weld Racing Wheels Hard Charger Award” went to Mike
Woodruff who came from his 12th place
starting position to finish in 7th for the
evening.
Heat race winners were Darren Bowman, Brian Herbert and
Ray Seemann.
