The 2007 Season came to a close Sunday afternoon as the United Rebel
Sprint Series made their debut at
the McCook Speedway. The URSS Rebels hit the 3/8’s mile
high bank track with several positions in the Season Points
still up
for grabs. When the checkers flew, Justin Schwien picked up his
third win of the 2007 URSS Season.
Leading the field to the green was McCook Nebraska's Darren
Berry with Lenora Kansas' Cody Keiswetter on the outside pole.
Berry took the lead with Corey Lutters, Keiswetter, Cody Salem
and eighth starter Justin Schwien rounding out the top five at
the end of lap one. Tenth place starter Rick Salem moved
up to challenge Cody Salem for the fourth spot on lap two as
the Father and Son duo battled for several laps until the Elder
Salem took the position on lap Five and set his sights on third
place Schwien. Lap seven saw Schwien and Rick Salem pass Corey
Lutters for the second and third spots respectively and set
their sights on the leader Darren Barry.
Lap ten saw Cody Salem make the pass for the fourth spot, as he
once again set off to challenge for the third spot with his
father. Lap twelve saw Schwien use the low line to his advantage
as he grabbed the lead away from Berry with Rick and Cody Salem
hot on his heels. The caution flag flew on lap thirteen for a
spin in turn one and URSS Point leader Smokey Fairbank headed to
the pits with a flat left front tire on his mount. Fairbank got
back on track after some quick work by his fellow competitors to
rejoin the field.
On the restart, Rick Salem made his move to take the second spot
from Berry as Brian Herbert starting applying the pressure on
Berry for the third spot. With three to go Herbert grabbed
the spot and set off to try and catch the leaders. Schwien was
working his way through traffic with Salem in his tire tracks,
Salem found some grip on the bottom and was making up ground on
the leader. Schwien moved to the bottom as the checkers fell it
