Johnson Notches His Seventh URSS Feature
Win at Norton
Day two of the Labor Day Weekend double
header at the Elmwood Park Speedway saw some wild and crazy
action Sunday night you would of almost thought it was a
Full Moon in the Kansas sky. But when it was all said and
done, the “Kansas Tornado” Jon Johnson put win number seven
into the record books for the 2007 URSS Season.
The field was lead to the green flag by
Doug Roth and by the end of lap one, fourth place starter
Darren Bowman had taken the top spot followed by Ken Lutters,
Roth, Brian Herbert and Randy Bantam rounding out the top
five. By lap three tenth place starter Jon Johnson had made
his way to the third spot with current URSS points leader
Smokey Fairbank on his back bumper. Saturday night’s winner
Justin Schwien along with Sappa Valley Construction B Main winner Mike Woodruff worked
their way to the fifth and sixth spot respectively by lap
five.
Schwien got around Fairbank for the
fifth spot with Woodruff challenging Fairbank for the sixth
spot on lap six, with Woodruff making the pass for the sixth
spot two laps later. Lap ten saw Schwien slow on the front
stretch with mechanical problems to bring out the caution.
On the restart, Johnson hounded Bowman’s back bumper for the
lead Johnson taking the spot coming out of turn four.
Lap fourteen is was when the action
started in turn one as Darren Bowman and Ray Seemann spun
and in the ensuing action Mark Bantam got squeezed into the
turn two wall and took a tumble bringing out the red flag.
Bantam was okay but done for the night, Seemann and Bowman
were able to continue. Points leader Smokey Fairbank got
high and brushed the turn one wall causing the right front
tire to go flat to bring out the caution a lap later, but
quick work by several crew members of other cars got him
back out to rejoin the field.
Back in the field, fifteenth starter
Cody Salem had methodically worked his way to the sixth
position by lap fifteen and set his sights on fifth place
Mike Woodruff as Darren Berry had his hands full in third as
Kris Miller was on his tail. Lap sixteen saw Woodruff take
the third spot from Berry with Miller and Salem closely
shadowing Berry in his tire tracks. Taylor Velasquez had
battled his way to the seventh position from his thirteen
starting spot with Jeff Radcliffe and Smokey Fairbank in
pursuit.
Up front Johnson continued to hold his
lead with Herbert and Woodruff trying to find a way around
the cagey veteran. With two to go Woodruff took the second
spot from Herbert and set his sights on Johnson but it was
to no avail and as the checkered flag flew it was Johnson
taking the win followed by Woodruff, Herbert, Beery and a
hard charging Salem rounding out the top five.
The Weld Racing “Hard Charger Award”
went the St. Joseph Missouri driver Cody Salem who raced his
way to the fifth position from his fifteen starting spot.
Heat race winners were Jon Johnson,
Smokey Fairbank, Justin Schwien, and Randy Bantam.
