Schwien Takes Second URSS
Win of the Season at Norton
As the United Rebel Sprint Series
pulled into the Elmwood Park Speedway, the excitement was
building for a night of racing to remember. Twenty Nine
teams made their onto the historic half-mile and when the
checkered flag fell, it was Justin Schwien pulling off a
repeat of his win at the same track where he picked up his
first career URSS win just one year ago.
Leading the field to the green was
Silver Lake Kansas’ Dominic Thyfault, as the field hit the
backstretch third starter Dodge City’s Brian Herbert took
the lead with Kris Miller, Ray Seeman, Ken Lutters and
Thyfault rounding out the top five. The red flag flew when
Thyfault and Cody Salem tangled in turn one. Both cars were
through for the evening but neither driver was injured. On
the restart, Herbert jumped out to the lead with Seemann in
his tracks. By lap four the “Kansas Tornado” Jon Johnson had
made his way from his eighth starting position to the third
spot with Lutters and Keefe Hemel in tow.
Lap six saw Seemann wrestle the top
spot away from Herbert with Johnson hot his heels. Johnson
and Herbert battled back and forth until Johnson took the
position away on lap ten. Behind this battle, Schwien,
Lutters and Hemel were in their own tug of war for the
fourth, fifth and sixth spots. Schwien took the third
position for good on lap thirteen and set his sights on
Johnson. As the trio started to work their way through
traffic, the battle grew even stronger with each using
slower cars to their advantage.
Lap fourteen saw the “Kansas Tornado”
take the top spot with Seemann and Schwien closely in tow.
Tenth starter Mike Woodruff in his URSS debut had quietly
worked his way to the fourth spot after passing Lutters on
lap sixteen. A little farther back in the pack a heated
battle between Herbert, Lutters and Hemel was shaping up
with Herbert claiming the fifth spot on lap nineteen.
The last five laps of the feature
proved to be an absolute race fans fantasy as Johnson,
Seemann and Schwien traded spots almost every corner. The
trio used lapped traffic as picks to make their move, only
to have Johnson take the lead at the flag stand. With two to
go, Schwien made his move as he dove to the bottom and
powered his way past Semman and Johnson going into turn one
and never looked back. All Johnson and Seemann could do was
watch as Schwien pulled away to take his second URSS Feature
win if the season and move within 25 points of the second
place points position. Rounding out the top five were
Johnson, Seemann, Woodruff and Herbert.
The Weld Racing Wheels “Hard Charger
Award” went to Randy Bantam who came from his 21st
starting position to finish 12th for the night.
Heat race winners were Jon Johnson, Ken
Lutters, Keefe Hemel and Justin Schwien.
