Johnson Picks Up Third URSS Win in Hugoton
With storm clouds looming all around
the Dirtona Raceway, the “Kansas Tornado” Jon Johnson swept
into Victory Lane to claim his third URSS Feature win.
Johnson is the first Driver to pick up three wins in the
Fourteen Events held this season. Johnson had his work cut
out for him as he battled Ken Lutters for the first half of
the race before taking the lead.
Ransom Kansas native Reed Bernbeck lead
the field to the green with Larry Radcliffe along side. By
the exit of turn two, Ken Lutters jumped the lead followed
by Larry Radcliffe, Axtell Nebraska’s Doug Roth, Bernbeck
and Jeff Radcliffe rounding out the top five positions. By
lap five, Justin Schwien had started making his charge to
the front by taking over the fifth spot. One lap later
Johnson took the position away from Schwien and they both
set sight on the leaders.
Lap seven saw Schwien take the runner
up spot with Johnson in his tire tracks in third with Ray
Seemann in tow. Lutters kept the trio at bay lap after lap
as the foursome behind him battled for position. Further
back in the pack a five-car race was heating up between Kris
Miller, Reed Bernbeck, Taylor Velasquez, Smokey Fairbank and
Randy Bantam as the quintet battle for positions four
through eighth. Miller held the fourth position as the four
behind him swapped spots back and forth from lap ten to lap
twenty with Bantam finding some grip in the middle of the
track for a short time while the other took the high and low
lines to jockey back and forth.
Up front Johnson finally got past
Lutters for the top spot on lap seventeen with Seemann,
Schwien and Miller following close behind. Lap twenty-one
saw Schwien take the runner up spot only to have Seemann
pass him a lap later. Fairbank made the pass for the fifth
position on the white flag lap as the checkers flew Johnson
took the win with Seemann, Schwien, Lutters and Fairbank
rounding out the top five.
Heat Race winners were Larry Racliffe,
Jon Johnson and Ray Seemann.
The Weld Racing Wheels “Hard Charger
Award” went to Jon Johnson who parlayed his tenth starting
position into a win.
